Training for the practical application of
science in industry and commerce. Britain's
industrial revolution preceded that of the
rest of Europe by half a century and its
prosperity stimulated other countries to
encourage technological education. France
established the Ecole Polytechnique, the
first technological university, in 1794, and
Germany founded the Technische Hochschulen in
Berlin 1799. Britain founded the mechanics
institutes for education in technology,
notably the University of Manchester
Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST)
1824. UMIST, together with the Imperial
College of Science and Technology 1907, still
forms a focus of technological research in
the UK. The USA established a number of
institutes on European lines, such as the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology 1861.
The USSR and China have particularly
emphasized training of technologists. The US
also established a number of institutes on
European lines, such as the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology 1861 and the
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 1824.
Intensive training of technologists,
exceeding the pace of both W Europe and the
US, has been emphasized by both the Soviet
Union and China.
